Q1. What is biochemical engineering?
Biochemical engineering is considered the cutting-edge discipline of chemical engineering. It adopts the principles and approaches of chemical engineering to study and solve the production processes which involve living organisms or biologically active substances and applies the basic theories and engineering technical problems involved in bio-processes. As an interdisciplinary subject encompassing biochemistry, microbiology and chemical engineering, biochemical engineering is a biotechnology which plays an integral role in transferring the achievement of modern biology into production capacity.

Q2. What are the functions and advantages of food additives?
Food additives facilitate the development of the food industry and are regarded as the essence of the modern food industry. Appropriate use of food additives can prevent the food from going bad, maintain or enhance food nutrition and improve or enrich the color, fragrance and flavor of the food or drink. Food additives also are instrumental in the development of new types of food, the food processing technology, and the convenient supply of food.

Q3. Will long term consumption of food additives cause harm to health?
Using food additives during food processing is almost inevitable. "Food additives" and "restricted additives" are two totally different concepts. As long as the food additives used are in compliance with national health and safety standards, the food additives should not be harmful to health.

Changmao strictly adheres to national and international standards when producing food additives which do not contain any prohibited substances. Changmao has a good record in quality examination and quality control since our establishment and to date no substance prohibited by these standards has been found in our products.

Q4. What are the major materials of food additives?
There are two kinds of common food additives: natural and artificial additives. The former are made from natural ingredients, mainly extracted from plants and some are made from animal products and microorganisms. Artificial additives are made from synthetic chemical products.

Q5. What is the different between natural and common malic acid?
From the chemical point of view, natural and common malic acid have the same chemical structure and functions. However, natural malic acid is mainly produced from glucose utilizing bio-fermentation technology. This is in line with the development trend of the global food additives industry towards using natural and healthy products.

Changmao is the world's first enterprise capable of large-scale production of natural malic acid.

Q6. How many staff does the company employ?
As at the end of 2013, Changmao employed approximately 500 staff of which R&D staff accounted for more than 15%.

Q7. What kind of R&D projects is the company currently engaged in?
Currently, the Lianyungang project is the development focus of Changmao. The Lianyungang project will substitute butane for benzene as a raw material for production. Moreover, Changmao will more actively develop natural food additives, and is conducting new R&D projects in feed additive PQQ, pharmaceutical adjuvants, active pharmaceutical ingredients and nutraceutical products.

Q8. What are the key growth drivers for the company in the future?
Changmao's future key growth drivers will be mainly derived from the production plant in Lianyungang. The commencement of the production plant will help to advance the updates and upgrades of the product range and develop high value-added food additives and thus enhance Changmao's overall competitiveness.
